Ann Mitchell 1922 - 2020

Ann Mitchell, who was a resident of 20 Regent Terrace for over 50 years with her husband Angus, sadly died in May 2020. Ann was a codebreaker and researcher who, during World War II, worked on the on decrypting messages encoded in the German Enigma machine at Hut 6 Machine Room, Bletchley Park, England. After the war she became a marriage councillor and wrote several books (including ‘The People of Calton Hill’). She achieved an MPhil at Edinburgh University and her research led to changes in Scottish law so that the needs of children were properly looked after if their parents divorced. She is survived by four children and six grandchildren.
